OpenAI Raises Work and Codex Limits, Plans to Merge Them With ChatGPT in December

OpenAI has increased the included usage of Work and Codex tools for selected paid plans. Starting in December, ChatGPT and Codex are expected to share a common token quota.

ChatGPT Codex limits have increased for some paid plans. On October 29, OpenAI adjusted the included usage of ChatGPT Work and Codex for the Pro 100, Pro 200, Pro 500, and Business Premium plans. Starting in December, the company also plans to introduce a shared token quota for ChatGPT and Codex on the Plus, Pro, and Business plans.

The change mainly affects users who make heavier use of Work’s agentic features and the Codex programming tool. However, OpenAI has not published exact numerical quotas for the individual plan variants, so the practical difference cannot be quantified uniformly for all customers.

ChatGPT Codex limits are higher for selected plans

For the Pro 100 and Pro 500 plans, OpenAI doubled the previous Work and Codex usage limit. For the Pro 200 variant, the company canceled the previously announced limit reduction. Users affected by the lower limit are expected to be brought back up to the higher level.

The adjustment also includes the Business Premium plan. However, the announcement does not specify the number of tokens or tasks available in each affected program. Users can therefore assess the change mainly through the remaining capacity shown in their account and the time when it will be restored.

Work is a ChatGPT environment designed for agentic capabilities, while Codex is a tool focused on programming tasks. OpenAI includes them in limited usage for selected subscriptions, and the company is now increasing those limits.

A shared quota is coming in December

The second change is expected in December. OpenAI plans to move Work’s agentic capabilities into the main ChatGPT environment. The Plus, Pro, and Business plans will then have one shared token quota for ChatGPT and Codex.

In practice, this means that use of ChatGPT and Codex premium features will draw from one shared capacity. For people who combine both tools in one workflow, it will be important to monitor the remaining quota and its reset time rather than separate limits for each service.

OpenAI also states that so-called “Instant chat” will not count toward the shared quota. This is therefore not a general limit on every ChatGPT conversation, but a mechanism tied to the relevant premium and agentic features.

What OpenAI has not clarified yet

The company has not yet confirmed which specific Work capabilities will be available directly in the main ChatGPT interface after the December move. It has also not published a precise rollout schedule for the change.

The exact limits and prices of the individual plans after the transition to a shared quota also remain open. These details will show what capacity will be available to Plus, Pro, and Business users when combining ChatGPT and Codex.
