OpenAI introduces GPT-6.1 Terra for API, ChatGPT Work and Codex
OpenAI introduced GPT-6.1 Terra, a model designed for visual reasoning, computer use, writing and coding. In the API, its stated price is lower than that of selected previous models.

OpenAI introduced GPT-6.1 Terra, a new model designed for visual reasoning, computer use, writing and coding. The model is available through the API under the identifier gpt-6.1-terra, and the company made it available to users on the Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu plans in ChatGPT Work and Codex.
According to OpenAI, Terra targets tasks in which the model works with visual inputs or performs steps in a computer interface. The API documentation lists support for tools including the computer use function.
GPT-6.1 Terra and API pricing
OpenAI set the price at 1 USD per million input tokens, 0.05 USD per million cached input tokens and 5 USD per million output tokens. Cached inputs are reusable parts of the context for which the API charges a reduced rate.
The company also states that the standard API price is 50% lower than for the GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-6.1 Sol models. The comparison concerns prices stated by OpenAI; actual costs in a specific deployment will also depend on the volume of input and output tokens and cache usage.
Availability in OpenAI products
According to the announcement, GPT-6.1 Terra is available to users on the Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu plans in ChatGPT Work and Codex. For developers, it is available through the API as a standalone model.
The combination of a lower stated price and computer-use support may be relevant to developers automating repetitive tasks in applications or working with visual inputs. OpenAI presents the model as a tool for agentic workflows, writing and code creation.
Performance comparisons still need verification
OpenAI states that its evaluations indicate more than three times faster task completion compared with GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol. However, these are results presented by the vendor, and independent verification is not yet available.
Likewise, comparisons of factuality, coding capabilities and per-task costs are based on internal or vendor-published benchmarks. They may therefore not accurately reflect results in all production scenarios.
As deployment continues, it will be important to monitor independent tests of speed, reliability and actual costs. Practical limits involving availability and quotas also remain open questions, as do safety experiences with agents that work directly in a computer interface.
