Anthropic Combines Claude Cowork and Chat in One Interface
Anthropic is gradually removing the separation between chat and the Cowork workspace. The new Claude interface is designed to connect questions, work with files, the web and code, and content creation in one conversation.
Claude Cowork and chat are gradually being merged into one Claude conversational experience. Anthropic announced the change on September 16, 2026, and is beginning to roll it out in stages to Pro and Max subscribers on the web, desktop and mobile.
Until now, Claude separated regular chat from Cowork, a workspace for more extensive tasks. After migration, users are expected to work in one interface: in the same conversation, they can ask a quick question, work with files, use web search, write code or create outputs. Anthropic is thus removing the choice between two separate modes.
What the Claude Cowork and chat integration brings
According to Anthropic, Claude will automatically use the appropriate tools for a specific task within the unified interface. From the user’s perspective, this is intended to move Cowork’s agentic workflows directly into the standard conversation, without having to switch to a separate workspace.
The company says existing Cowork tasks, projects, connectors, skills, artifacts and files will be transferred for users. This is a one-way change: after migration, it will not be possible to restore separate Chat and Cowork options.
The announcement also includes new Claude Docs and Claude Slides tools. They are intended for creating and editing documents and presentations. Together with Claude Design, these features are in beta for paid plans.
Availability is gradual, not universal
The new feature is not being deployed to all accounts at once. Anthropic is introducing it first for the Pro and Max plans, and even users on the same plan may not receive it at the same time. Therefore, it is not accurate to say that the unified interface is already available to every Claude user.
There is currently no confirmed date for the Free and Team plans. Anthropic only says they will come later. For Enterprise, this is not an immediate change: administrators are expected to receive notice at least 30 days before it is introduced.
Limitations when moving to the new Claude
Official documentation also lists several current limitations. The new environment does not support adding content from GitHub, branching conversations or searching older Cowork tasks. Users who rely on these options may therefore encounter differences from the original Cowork when switching.
As the rollout expands, it will be important to monitor the pace of availability for Pro and Max, subsequent dates for Free, Team and Enterprise, and how the tools work in practice with local files and computer control. The security restrictions on automated actions will also be relevant.
The interface change expands Claude as a work product alongside its role as a conversational assistant. Instead of separate chat and Cowork spaces, Anthropic aims to offer one conversation connecting questions, tools and the creation of work outputs.
