NVIDIA Plans AI Data Centers With Australian Partners, Targeting Up to 2 GW
NVIDIA announced cooperation with eight Australian companies on AI data center projects with a planned combined capacity of up to 2 GW by 2027.

NVIDIA AI infrastructure in Australia is set to grow through projects involving eight local partners, according to a new announcement. On September 9, the company said it is working with Firmus, Sharon AI, IREN, Megaport, ResetData, CDC, NEXTDC and AirTrunk to expand land, power capacity and prepared facilities for NVIDIA DSX AI factories.
The announced combined scope of the projects reaches up to 2 GW by 2027. However, this is the maximum target capacity of the planned projects, not the output of data centers already in operation today. The partner companies are expected to operate them. NVIDIA is to provide the DSX platform, accelerated computing, networking technologies, software and ecosystem support.
NVIDIA AI infrastructure is set to rely on projects from eight partners
The cooperation involves companies in data centers, cloud services and network infrastructure. NVIDIA did not disclose how the planned 2 GW would be divided among individual partners or provide a schedule for specific locations.
For two projects, the company provided more specific figures. Sharon AI is to deploy up to 68,000 NVIDIA GPUs. IREN, meanwhile, is developing the Bundey campus in South Australia with a planned capacity of 800 MW. These figures cannot automatically be applied to the entire announced portfolio of projects: NVIDIA did not disclose the total number of GPUs or the share of capacity that will actually be equipped with its systems.
Reuters independently confirmed that NVIDIA is working with a group of Australian cloud and data companies on projects that could support up to 2 GW of AI capacity by 2027.
Electricity and prepared data centers are key parts of the plan
The announcement shows that building large-scale AI systems is no longer only about the availability of graphics processors. Land, prepared data center facilities, connections to the power grid and sufficient power capacity are also needed. According to NVIDIA, these areas are to be provided by its Australian partners.
If the projects are completed, they could expand local GPU computing capacity for companies, research institutions and the public sector. NVIDIA and its partners also point to benefits for in-country data processing and Australian AI sovereignty. However, these are statements from the companies; the outcome will depend on construction, access to energy, demand for computing and hardware deliveries.
Details on financing, permits and timelines are missing
The plan through 2027 does not yet include a public breakdown of financing, permits or electricity supply contracts. The precise technical parameters of individual AI factories, their customers or binding volumes of ordered GPUs are also unknown.
What will therefore matter most are the partners’ individual investment decisions, announcements of specific locations and the pace at which new capacity is connected to the grid. It will also be worth tracking how much of the announced 2 GW is actually connected and brought into operation by the end of 2027, and how regulators and grid operators respond to the projects’ energy requirements.
