Mistral Closes €3 Billion Series D, Valuation Exceeds €21 Billion

French AI model developer Mistral confirmed the closing of its €3 billion Series D round. Samsung Electronics led the round.

Mistral Series D has closed: the company announced it raised €3 billion at a post-money valuation exceeding €21 billion. Samsung Electronics led the financing, with Scaleup Europe Fund, managed by EQT, and existing investor PSG Equity as co-leads.

The announcement confirms information from June 2026, when reports emerged publicly about negotiations for an investment of approximately €3 billion at a valuation of around €20 billion. At the time, however, the financing had not been confirmed as closed.

Mistral Series D Will Strengthen Research and Infrastructure

Mistral said it will use the new capital to expand research, training compute capacity, and infrastructure. The funds are also intended to support the company’s commercial growth and international expansion.

The company develops AI models and combines open-weight models with its own computing and cloud infrastructure. The investment provides it with significantly more capital to fund these areas.

According to Mistral, this is the largest equity financing for a European technology company in history. However, this characterization of the round has not been independently verified.

Samsung Leads the Investment Round

Samsung Electronics is the lead investor in the round. The co-leads include Scaleup Europe Fund, managed by EQT, and PSG Equity, an existing Mistral investor. The company did not disclose the individual contribution amounts from investors or the full terms of the transaction.

According to the announced information, Samsung’s participation expands Mistral’s investor base to include a major industrial and semiconductor partner. However, the company announcement does not specify any agreements on products, infrastructure, or joint development.

What Comes Next After the Mistral Series D Round

The next questions concern the ownership stakes of Samsung Electronics, EQT, and other investors. Specific models, computing infrastructure, and commercial contracts that Mistral funds with the capital will also be important.

The company also links its activities to the ambition of building so-called sovereign AI. However, the contribution of the funds raised to the performance of future models or the fulfillment of this ambition remains Mistral’s forecast for now.
