ChatGPT, Claude and Grok Had Simultaneous Outages on September 3
OpenAI, Anthropic and xAI confirmed overlapping incidents affecting their AI services. No common cause is known yet.

Simultaneous outages affecting ChatGPT, Claude and Grok overlapped within a several-hour window on September 3, 2026. OpenAI, Anthropic and xAI confirmed problems with their services on their respective status pages, but did not disclose any common cause. Google has not officially confirmed user reports of a similar problem with Gemini.
Simultaneous ChatGPT, Claude and Grok outages occurred at the same time
First, at approximately 13:26 UTC, Anthropic began recording elevated error rates across several Claude models. During the incident, the company said it had identified the cause and deployed a fix. According to its timeline, the impact on users ended at 16:16 UTC.
At approximately the same time, xAI also recorded a problem. Its status page lists an outage affecting Grok models in the Grok web service and the Grok in X integration, which began at 13:30 UTC. According to the individual records, the incident lasted approximately 3 hours and 35 to 37 minutes.
OpenAI also confirmed elevated error rates across ChatGPT and Codex. The incident caused degraded performance in both services. The company deployed mitigating measures and later marked it as resolved. The incidents therefore overlapped in time across Claude, Grok and OpenAI services.
No common cause has been confirmed
Timing alone does not prove that the incidents had the same origin. None of the three operators disclosed a common cause. The available announcements therefore do not support the conclusion that the problems were caused by a single external factor.
It has also not been confirmed that the ChatGPT outage was related to the release of a model referred to as “Astra.” OpenAI has not publicly stated such a connection.
During the outages, users of three major AI platforms simultaneously had limited access to the chatbots. For OpenAI, the problem also affected Codex. The status pages describe elevated error rates or degraded performance, but not the same technical manifestation across all platforms.
Gemini remains an unverified part of the event
User reports and monitoring-service signals concerning Gemini and Google AI Studio also emerged in connection with the September problems. However, Google has not publicly confirmed a Gemini outage, its scope or its cause. This information therefore cannot be placed on the same level as the confirmed incidents involving OpenAI, Anthropic and xAI.
Three overlapping outages are confirmed, not four. Without an official statement from Google, it is not possible to reliably determine the scope of any potential Gemini problem.
What could provide further explanation
Potential postmortem reports from OpenAI, Anthropic or xAI could provide more technical details. Any subsequent confirmation of the incident by Google, as well as any evidence of a common external factor among the three confirmed outages, would also be relevant.
For companies using generative AI in their workflows, the event illustrates the practical operational risk of relying on a single provider. The available data, however, describes only the overlap of separately confirmed failures, not a shared explanation.
