Anthropic Reports Lower Share of Junior Technical Hires Amid Wider AI Use
An internal Anthropic analysis shows a decline in the share of junior workers and hires in technical teams. The company also says technical hiring continued to grow in absolute numbers.

The share of junior hires at Anthropic in technical departments has fallen significantly, according to a new internal company report. On October 16, 2026, Anthropic said the share of junior technical hires had declined from 27% to 9% since the beginning of 2025. However, this does not mean that technical hiring has stopped or confirm that junior employees were laid off.
The report describes how the organization of work, hiring and use of AI tools are changing at the AI lab. Anthropic links the shift to broader use of Claude and AI agents, while also pointing to other factors, such as the company’s rapid growth and expansion of nontechnical functions.
The Share of Junior Hires at Anthropic Declined
The share of junior workers in Anthropic’s technical departments fell from 21% to 14% since the beginning of 2025. The shift was even more pronounced among new hires: juniors accounted for 27% of technical hires at the start of the period under review, but only 9% later.
The company says that since April 2026, engineering and research teams have placed less emphasis on filling lower technical levels. According to the report, approximately one-third of machine-learning managers and one-fifth of software-engineering managers said they are hiring fewer people because of AI.
However, Anthropic explicitly distinguishes between a change in share and the absolute volume of hiring. According to the company, the number of technical hires continued to grow, but at a slower pace than hiring in sales, finance and recruiting. The published data do not provide absolute hiring figures broken down by seniority.
Greater Emphasis on Independence and Working With AI
According to Anthropic, technical roles have placed greater emphasis on independence, judgment and the ability to work effectively with AI tools.
The report is therefore not direct evidence that the same trend is occurring across the entire economy or throughout all technology companies. Anthropic presents its own internal data and also acknowledges that the changing workforce composition is influenced by the company’s growth and the expansion of nontechnical teams.
For graduates and early-career technical workers, the key point is to read the figures precisely. The published data show a smaller relative share of juniors among technical hires, not the elimination of all junior positions. The report also does not confirm that Anthropic laid off junior employees.
Time Spent in Meetings Also Increased
The internal analysis also recorded a change in work habits. According to calendar data, the median time spent in meetings increased by 20% year over year. Among technical workers without management responsibilities, the increase was 16%.
Anthropic included these data in a broader description of how a rapidly growing organization operates. The figures alone cannot determine the extent to which the increase in meetings was directly caused by the use of AI tools.
TechCrunch also independently summarized the report’s main findings on October 17. Further assessment of the trend will require more detailed methodological data, particularly absolute hiring figures by experience level and comparable data from other employers. Anthropic also describes the internal redeployment of workers as a response to task automation.
