HashiCorp Ends Boundary Community Edition Development, Archives Repository
HashiCorp has stopped developing Boundary Community Edition. The project will no longer receive new releases, bug fixes, or security patches.

HashiCorp announced the deprecation of Boundary Community Edition on October 9, 2026. The project repository, hashicorp/boundary, has been archived on GitHub and is now available only in read-only mode. The company does not plan any further releases, maintenance updates, bug fixes, or security patches for the community edition.
The decision does not affect the paid HCP Boundary and Boundary Enterprise products. HashiCorp said that future Boundary development will focus on these commercial editions.
What is ending for Boundary Community Edition
Boundary provides identity-based access to internal systems and infrastructure. For Community Edition, official upstream development and maintenance are now ending. This means users should not expect new features, releases, or fixes for issues discovered after the project was archived.
The source code and previously released binaries remain available. HashiCorp also says that the community can fork the repository and continue development independently. However, the availability of the code does not mean that an actively maintained community successor exists.
This is not an announcement of a specific exploited vulnerability in Boundary CE. The security impact is that future security fixes are no longer expected for the final releases. If a security-relevant flaw appears later, the official Community Edition should not receive a patch for it.
What operators should review
Organizations using Boundary CE should first identify all deployments, their versions, and the systems to which the tool provides access. It is also important to determine whether Boundary is part of critical operational procedures or administrator and automation access flows.
- Inventory Boundary CE deployments and the versions in use.
- Monitor future security advisories and CVEs affecting the final versions.
- Evaluate migrating to HCP Boundary or Boundary Enterprise.
- Assess the credibility of any potential community fork, especially its process for fixes and patch releases.
- Do not assume that an actively supported official upstream still exists for CE.
The fact that Boundary controls access to internal services makes its maintenance status relevant to security and compliance processes as well. An unmaintained component in the access layer may increase operational risk over time, especially if the organization has no update or replacement plan.
License and community options
When describing Boundary as an open-source project, it is necessary to distinguish between source-code availability and licensing terms. For newer versions, the repository lists the Business Source License 1.1. It contains restrictions concerning competing hosted or embedded offerings, so it is not accurate to generally describe newer releases solely as open source.
Forking the repository is possible, but it has not yet been confirmed whether a community capable of sustaining releases, change reviews, and security fixes will emerge. Likewise, publicly confirmed figures are not available for the number of production Community Edition deployments or how many users will move to commercial products or alternative forks.
What to watch after the archive
HashiCorp may still add a migration plan, end-of-support dates, or specific security recommendations for existing installations. Operators should also monitor any changes in the availability of binaries, packages, and documentation for Community Edition.
An important signal will be the emergence of a viable community fork with a clearly defined process for handling security flaws. Until then, the archived repository and the end of patching are decisive information for any organization using Boundary CE to control access to its own infrastructure.
