Seoul Police Officer Investigated Over AI Sexual Deepfakes

An officer from Dongdaemun Police Station was detained on suspicion of possessing, producing and distributing sexual materials, including AI-manipulated videos.

AI sexual deepfakes are the subject of an investigation in South Korea. Media reports on October 4 said that an officer from Dongdaemun Police Station in Seoul was detained in September on suspicion of possessing sexual materials and possessing, producing or distributing fake videos. No publicly available indictment or court ruling is known at this time.

According to reports by MBN and Kyeonggi Ilbo, the investigation was led by police in Busan. It began in December 2025 after authorities obtained court permission for a covert investigation of a Telegram group. After several months, they reportedly identified the suspect as a Seoul police officer.

AI Sexual Deepfakes in the Telegram Investigation

According to the reports, investigators conducted a search of the suspect’s home in August and seized his devices. They reportedly found approximately 5,600 illegal videos on them. According to the media, the materials included AI-manipulated videos, child sexual abuse material and other illegal recordings.

Citing police findings, the media also reported suspicions that the man created more than 400 AI-manipulated videos and posted dozens of them. However, this figure has not been confirmed by a public court document or a separate official police announcement.

According to the cited statement by a police official, Dongdaemun Police Station initially suspended the man from duty and later removed him from his position. Available reports do not make clear what stage the disciplinary proceedings have reached or whether prosecutors have decided to file charges.

The Technological Dimension of the Case

The case highlights the misuse of AI applications to create sexual deepfake content and its possible distribution in closed Telegram groups. However, no failure of a specific AI model, developer or platform has been confirmed. Publicly available information refers to suspected use of AI to manipulate videos, not to the technical origin or exact tool used to create them.

The covert investigation of the Telegram group also illustrates the procedure police reportedly used to identify the suspect. Since this is an ongoing investigation, the legal classification of the alleged acts, the number of files and the exact scope of the alleged distribution may still be clarified in further proceedings.

What Comes Next

Further developments will depend mainly on the prosecution’s decision on a possible indictment and on the release of primary documents by police or the court. Those documents could clarify the scope of the seized content and the specific acts attributed to the suspect. The outcome of the police disciplinary proceedings will also be important.

Detention itself does not mean a conviction. The suspect’s guilt has not been finally determined, and the details reported are based on secondary media reports about the police investigation.
