CFTC Registers Coinbase Clearing LLC as a Derivatives Clearing Organization

The U.S. CFTC has registered Coinbase Clearing LLC as a DCO. The entity may clear fully collateralized futures, options on futures, and swaps.

Coinbase Clearing’s registration with the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has been confirmed. On September 28, 2026, based on a commission decision, the regulator registered Coinbase Clearing LLC as a derivatives clearing organization (DCO), meaning a clearing organization for derivatives markets.

The registration authorizes Coinbase Clearing LLC to clear fully collateralized futures, options on futures, and swaps. However, it does not by itself mean the immediate launch of a specific derivatives product or its availability to retail clients.

What Coinbase Clearing’s Registration Allows

A clearing organization is part of derivatives market infrastructure. It handles trade clearing and collateral management. The CFTC decision covers fully collateralized contracts in three categories:

  • futures,
  • options on futures,
  • swaps.

This is regulatory authorization for a clearing entity, not approval of an individual contract or trading offering. The available information does not specify the products, their parameters, or the markets where they will be traded.

Expansion of U.S. Derivatives Infrastructure

Coinbase says the new DCO complements its existing U.S. derivatives infrastructure. This includes Coinbase Financial Markets as a futures commission merchant (FCM) and Coinbase Derivatives as a designated contract market (DCM).

Obtaining its own regulated clearing entity expands the Coinbase group’s capacity for fully collateralized derivatives in the U.S. For these products, the company can use its own clearing infrastructure instead of relying exclusively on external clearing.

In its announcement, Coinbase mentions planned use of USDC as collateral and characterizes the clearing center as a solution native to the stablecoin, with continuous settlement. The CFTC registration itself, however, does not confirm the actual deployment of these features, the specific conditions for using USDC, or when they will become available.

What Is Not Yet Known

The CFTC record confirms Coinbase Clearing LLC’s status as a registered DCO and the scope of its authorized clearing activities. The published information does not state when the entity will actually begin clearing trades.

Other open questions include the first specific contracts, exchanges, or swap execution facilities (SEFs) for which Coinbase Clearing LLC will provide clearing, as well as the rules for accepting USDC as collateral. Any additional regulatory filings related to the launch of the services will also be relevant.
