Jensen Huang Rejects Predictions of Humanity’s Extinction Due to AI by 2030

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang told CBS News that he considers the probability of an AI-caused end of the world by 2030 to be zero. He also rejected slowing development and favored applying existing laws.

AI risks are viewed far less alarmingly by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang than by some researchers and industry executives. In an interview with CBS News, he said that, in his view, the probability of an artificial intelligence-caused end of the world by 2030 is “0%.”

Huang dismissed scenarios of humanity’s imminent extinction caused by AI as exaggerated “doomsday narratives.” In his view, there is no scientific basis for such warnings. However, this is his personal assessment, not a scientifically verified estimate of the probability of a catastrophic development.

He Does Not Consider AI Risks a Reason to Slow Development

In the interview, Nvidia’s CEO spoke against slowing the development of artificial intelligence. Regarding regulation, he argued that existing laws concerning liability and cybersecurity should be applied instead of introducing new special rules designed exclusively for AI.

Huang’s position contrasts with recent warnings from some researchers and executives at companies developing AI, as The Verge also noted. Claims about the probability of AI posing an existential risk remain the subject of professional and public debate.

The Position of a Company With a Key Role in AI Infrastructure

Nvidia is a key supplier of hardware used to develop and operate generative AI. Huang’s statements therefore matter beyond the safety debate itself: the company has a significant economic interest in this debate as an AI hardware supplier.

His appearance is therefore not an independent assessment of the safety of advanced AI systems. It has not been confirmed that current laws alone cover all possible risks posed by such systems.

The Debate Over Existential Risks Continues

Huang’s statement neither resolves nor closes the question of AI’s existential risk. His formulation of a zero probability of such an event by 2030 is not supported by scientific consensus.

Another point to watch will be whether Nvidia or Huang present more specific safety commitments or regulatory recommendations. Reactions from AI labs, safety experts and U.S. regulators will also be important, as will any potential new U.S. rules for the development, deployment and liability of advanced AI systems.
