AWS Makes Gemma 4 Available in Amazon Bedrock in Its European Sovereign Cloud

AWS added Gemma 4 models to Amazon Bedrock in the AWS European Sovereign Cloud. Inference takes place in the German eusc-de-east-1 Region without global cross-region inference.

Gemma 4 became generally available in Amazon Bedrock in the AWS European Sovereign Cloud on September 17, 2026. With this move, AWS brought the first family of open-weight models to this separate European cloud infrastructure.

According to the AWS announcement, inference requests for these models are processed in the eusc-de-east-1 Region in Germany. Global cross-region inference, the mechanism for routing inference between Regions, is also unavailable in the AWS European Sovereign Cloud.

Gemma 4 in Amazon Bedrock offers three variants

AWS lists three instruction-tuned models: Gemma 4 31B, Gemma 4 26B-A4B, and Gemma 4 E2B. Customers can use them through the bedrock-mantle endpoint, which offers an OpenAI-compatible API.

Compatibility includes both the Responses API and the Chat Completions API. Organizations already using these formats can therefore work with the models through the Amazon Bedrock interface.

Why availability in a sovereign cloud matters

The AWS European Sovereign Cloud is separate cloud infrastructure in the European Union. AWS previously stated that it has separate operational and residency controls. Adding Gemma 4 to Amazon Bedrock expands the model selection for European organizations that want to use open-weight models through a managed API while also having data-residency requirements.

Under the announced setup, inference is not performed in AWS’s regular global Regions but in the German Region of the sovereign cloud area. This is particularly relevant for workloads where an organization evaluates the location of data processing and the cloud service architecture.

However, the availability of the models alone does not automatically confirm compliance with the regulatory requirements of a particular organization. The assessment depends on the customer’s configuration, data management, and the legal or sector-specific rules applicable to that use.

What is not yet available

The verified materials did not include independent performance tests of Gemma 4 in the AWS European Sovereign Cloud or information about practical availability for specific workloads. We did not find current token pricing or limits for these models in the eusc-de-east-1 Region in the verified materials.

Another indicator will be whether AWS adds more open-weight models or third-party models to the European sovereign cloud. For customers, the pricing and operational parameters AWS makes available for each variant will also be important.
